The server portion of a virtual machine (VM), or the underlying hardware that supplies the computing resources to support a specific guest virtual machine, is known as a host virtual machine (guest VM). A description of the host virtual machine

An essential virtualization method is the host VM. It enables users to build a guest virtual machine (VM) with their own operating system (OS), programmes, computing power, etc. The computer that creates the guest VM is known as the host machine.

Infrastructure resources that are statically or dynamically scalable are allotted to each host machine. Additionally, it receives security details as well as performance and throughput statistics. These tasks are completed by the virtualization server in order to oversee the performance of all host machines.

The host VM hosting asks the host server for computing resources. Its information is kept in a virtualization setting that is connected to the virtualization manager programme.

A single physical server can host several host VMs. Additionally, every host VM on this single server can run and function independently of the activities of the other host VMs on that server. Furthermore, nothing running inside the VM interferes with anything else running on the host hardware because the environment is separated from the rest of the system.

Comparison of the host and visitor virtual machines

A VM consists of two parts: a host VM and a guest VM. A remote cloud server hosts and manages the host VM. Its features are comparable to those of a guest virtual machine. The host VM, however, is accessible in a different way than a guest VM.

The guest VM is a separate instance of an OS with all related data and software. It is sometimes referred to as a guest OS, guest computer, or just a guest.

The physical device that gives the guest VM access to the computer hardware resources, such as:

  • processing ability
  • Memory
  • Disk network input and output

While a guest virtual machine (VM) can run on a single physical system, it is typically spread across several hosts for load balancing. As a result, a physical host machine can run one or more virtual guest machines. Additionally, it can be relocated across host servers to suit changes in demand or make better use of available resources. A host VM can also exist as a smaller portion of the resources on one physical computer or as a larger portion of the resources on several different physical machines.

Between the host and guest VMs, a virtual machine monitor (VMM) or hypervisor functions as an intermediary. Additionally, it isolates several guest VMs from one another and enables a host to accommodate many guests using various operating systems.

Building design of VM Hosting

A host VM’s architecture consists of the following elements:

the OS and hypervisor layer serving as an intermediary; the hardware layer or host VM layer; the VM guest layer and host utilities.

The physical network interface cards (NICs), memory, CPU, and Ethernet management port are all present in the hardware layer of the virtual machine. NICs are designed to facilitate hardware virtualization based on SR-IOV (single root I/O virtualization), a method in which physical NICs are governed by the host VM while virtual functions are handled by the guest OS.
